Local & Category Specific Directories

The newest craze going on on the internet is Local and Category Specific Directories who are paying for high rankings and advertising on all of the top search engines to drive visitors to their site. They in turn charge a listing fee on their site for all related websites. I have heard nothing but good responses from this type of paid listing and I recommend it to all of my clients.

Here are a few examples of how it works: (these are examples only and are not based on real data)

The owner of a restaurant pays $40/month for a listing on TableForWho.com. TableForWho is partnered with all of the top search engines for top placement on keywords that are relevant to restaurants and Dining out. The owner of the restaurant receives 8 reservations from the listing. The average amount spent at the restaurant for these 8 reservations is $80. So as a business owner (owner of the restaurant), you paid only $5 for each reservation on a sales of approximately $80! 

The owner of a few cabins in Tennessee pays $20/month for a listing on CabinIndex.com. CabinIndex pays for a featured ad on Google to draw 20,000 visitors per month. Of that 20,000, 15 look at your cabin and 2 make reservations to rent it for one week. So as a business owner (owner of the cabins), you paid only $10 for each sale on a $600/week rental! 

It is impossible to pay such low rates and get the same amount of exposure that you will receive on a category specific directory. But, only if the category specific directory is driving traffic to their site and getting lots of visitors each month. This is an important aspect to check out before paying for your listings. 

The reason this kind of advertising works so well is because you are paying a much lower price to be listed on the category specific directory and that category specific directory is paying the higher price to get top placement to drive quality visitors. It is a win-win win-win...for the top search engine, for the local directory, for your business and for the visitor who is looking to find the most reliable information. Everybody wins!

Also note that there are still a lot of FREE local and category specific directories that do no charge a fee to be listed such as FloridaSmart.com but do however offer higher placement and advertising as well for a low cost. You should always do your research and get listed with as many of these directories as you can find and go ahead and pay for higher placement if the fee seems reasonable. Remember, the cost is still probably much lower than it would be for you to get the same kind of exposure on a larger search engine.
