Discussion Lists are places where people send and receive emails to participate in conversation on a particular subject. When you send or "post" your message to the list, everyone in the group gets to read it. They can be quite entertaining and yet quite annoying if too many people are simply posting advertisements about their business. In fact, in many groups, you will be banned if you "spam" with advertisements only. Especially if they are unrelated to the topic. And if you are not banned, people will bad-mouth you and you will develop a bad reputation as an evil spammer. This is not the image you are trying to promote! 

The idea of promoting your site through a discussion list is to build your reputation by responding to people with your knowledge of the subject. Then you can politely ask them to visit your website for more information (make sure you have the information on your website if you are referring them to it). Or better yet, add your website title and link to the footer or signature file at the end of your message.
